The Product Photography Playbook Just Changed

Aug 10, 2025

I spend a lot of my time building product and lifestyle imagery, and I can tell you: the workflow doesn't look like it did even a year ago.

The studio moved into the prompt

Packshots that used to need a full physical set — lighting rig, props, retoucher — can now be generated, iterated, and refined in hours instead of days. That doesn't replace great photography; it changes when you reach for it. Physical shoots are increasingly reserved for what only a camera can capture: real texture, real light, real imperfection.

Hybrid is the new standard

The strongest campaigns I see right now mix real photography with AI-generated extensions — a real product shot placed into a generated environment, or a real model composited into a scene that would've been unshootable on any real budget. Nobody's asking "is this real or AI" anymore; they're asking "does it feel true to the brand."

Consistency over perfection

Clients don't just want one gorgeous hero image — they want twenty consistent variations across formats, backgrounds, and seasons. AI-assisted workflows are what make that volume possible without twenty separate shoot days.

Craft still matters most

None of this works without a trained eye. Prompting a believable lifestyle scene takes the same instincts as directing a real shoot: light, composition, story. The tool changed. The job didn't.

Where this is heading

Expect production pipelines to keep blending real and generated assets — briefs that once said "photoshoot" are starting to say "imagery," full stop, regardless of how it's made.
